This year’s 70-mile race will be a virtual one.
We have exhausted all other options. In the best interest of public safety and Covid restrictions set forth by NY state, this year’s race will be a virtual one.
Here is how it will work: You will have anytime from Friday morning, May 28 till Monday evening, May 31 to continuously complete the 70-mile course. You must start in Otsego Lake and finish in Bainbridge. You will have to provide your own GPS tracker. You will need to present to race committee your GPS proof of finish and adherence to course. Once you present your GPS proof you will be mailed a finishers T shirt and get an official 70-mile finish. Entry fee will be $30 per person which covers insurance and t-shirt. There will be no awards, no winners, no times, just a finish. Entries will open for Virtual 70 May 1. You must pre-register to get credit for an official finish.
We will also be still having the Generation Gap races. They will be pre-race entry only. There will be no entry day of race this year to reduce the congregation of crowds. More details will follow concerning this.
We also will be having the scout races in a limited attendance. More details to follow.
There will be no activities at General Clinton Park this year due to the NYS Covid restrictions.
I know this is a huge disappointment to all of you as well as it is to me. You all have worked hard training in anticipation of a race this and we all worked hard to put on a world class race.
We look forward to an amazing race in 2022.
In 1963, 2 canoes made a pilot trip down the Susquehanna River from Cooperstown to Bainbridge. This voyage took 18 hours and 25 minutes. The first race was held July 4th, 1963 and had 45 entries. Winners finished in 11 hours 45 minutes. Today, the race record is 6 hours 34 minutes, 34 seconds. First place prize in 1963 was $200 and today's first place prize is $3000 and over $25,000 is awarded in prizes over the weekend The Regatta has grown from the one day event to 4 days of canoe races plus many other events; a 5k run, wrestling tournament, carnival rides, entertainment, food, fireworks and more. There are canoe races for young and old, newbies to pros. The General Clinton Canoe Regatta brings racers and spectators from all over the US, Canada, Europe and South America to paddle in this premier canoe racing event. The beautiful upper Susquehanna River valley plays host to this event every Memorial Day weekend and as the event founders hoped does bring visitors to our historical area.
Hope to see you in May.
